What laws should I be aware of when hiring employees?
Most importantly, you must avoid any discrimination during all stages of the hiring and employment process. Discrimination on the basis of race, color, gender, religion, age, national origin, disability, marital or veteran status, or any other legally protected status is prohibited.
Be aware of limitations regarding the hiring of employees younger than eighteen years old.
Abide by the law regarding the hiring of immigrants.
Respect the legal rights of privacy of the person who applies for the position.
What is "at-will" employment?
"At-will" employment means that either the employer or the employee can terminate the employment relationship at any time for any reason not in violation of the law.
What is the federal minimum wage?
The federal minimum wage from the Fair Labor Standards Act is $5.15 per hour. However, many states have their own minimum wage provisions which set a minimum wage that is higher than the federal minimum wage.
